The 2006 Draft

Our friends over at NFL Mocks are reviewing the 2006 draft, which was certainly one of the best in Saints history. They give the Saints a B- grade, but really, how can you not get a solid A+ for a draft that netted the likes of Reggie Bush, Jahri Evans, Roman Harper and Marques Colston?!?

I can understand the feeling that Bush hasn’t lived up to all the hype (who could live up to those expectations, anyway?), but thinking about the contributions made by that draft class as a whole is another story. The 2006 draft was pivotal in making the Saints what they are today – defending Super Bowl champions.

(Note: NFL Mocks has since revised their grade for the Saints to an A!)

R.I.P. Norman Hand

Former Saints DT Norman Hand was a popular member of the 2000 NFC West championship team.

It was really shocking to hear that former Saints defensive tackle Norman Hand passed away at the age of 37. The “Big Wiggle” was part of one of the Saints’ most memorable teams, the 2000 NFC West champs. He, along with La’Roi Glover, Joe Johnson and Darren Howard were probably the best defensive line in the league that year.

Hand always seemed like a big teddy bear who really loved life. It’s just terrible to think that he was only on this earth for such a short period of time.

My thoughts go out to his family, friends and fans. He’ll be missed by us all.

Road to Super Bowl XLIV: New Orleans Saints

A big shout out to my friends over at Warner Home Video for sending over a copy of Road to Super Bowl XLIV: New Orleans Saints on DVD! This package will be released to the public on June 1, 2010 and is essentially four full game broadcasts.

You get the Week 13 thriller in Washington, and then the Saints’ full playoff run against the Cardinals, Vikings and Colts. It’s really a great way to remember the season.

Honestly, I’m thrilled to have all three playoff games because, when they were being played, I was a so excited that there were a lot of moments I had forgotten. This will be a great way to catch all of the little details of the games that I missed out on the first time around.

The DVD will sell for $39.92, and there is a Blu-Ray version for $49.95. Definitely a great collector’s item and a way to remember the Super Bowl season for years to come.

Saints Pick CB Patrick Robinson in 1st Round

There was no wheeling or dealing for the Saints on the opening night of the NFL Draft. They stuck with their #32 pick in the 1st round and selected Florida State CB Patrick Robinson. The 5’11″, 194lb. corner is known as a speedster, and ran a 4.46 40 yard dash at the combine.

While it seemed the Saints may look to improve their defensive front seven with their first pick, drafting a corner in the 1st round for the second consecutive year makes sense.

Malcolm Jenkins, last year’s 1st rounder, figures to move to safety at some point in the future. But for now, Robinson gives this team even more depth at a position that has become the strength of this defense.

DE Alex Brown Signs with Saints

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Saints have agreed to a 2 year deal with former Bears DE Alex Brown. Brown has spent his entire 8 year career in Chicago and had 6 sacks in each of the past 2 seasons. His career high of 7 came in 2006, when the Bears defeated the Saints in the NFC Championship Game.

Brown fills the void at defensive end after New Orleans let Charles Grant go earlier this offseason.

Bell an Eagle

Mike Bell is now a Philadelphia Eagle, after the Saints declined to match Philly’s offer for the restricted free agent running back. Bell will bring his hard-charging running style to the city of brotherly love in 2010. He really reignited his career in New Orleans and, although he had a diminished role late in the season, he was still a key part of the Saints’ Super Bowl run. Good luck in Philly, Mike and thanks for the memories!
