Happy Holidays Saints fans!  It sure was nice to get that win over Detroit.  As disappointing as the Saints season has been given the expectations, I still have to feel sorry for the Lions faithful.  It’s not easy.  But, we’ll take that win and at the very least, a .500 record.  Join me to discuss the win and our hopes to close out the season at 9-7 against the Panthers.

Bears 27 – Saints 24

And so another year’s journey ends in hell, or, I mean, Soldier Field.  For the third straight year, the Saints hopes were destroyed in Chicago.  With their Thursday night loss in the Windy City, coupled with an Atlanta Falcons win on Sunday, the Saints are now officially eliminated from playoff contention.

You could tell it was going to be one of “those games” from the start, as Danieal Manning ran back the opening kickoff 83 yards to give Chicago an early 7-0 lead.  In fact, the Saints special teams coverage was once again horrible and repeatedly gave the Bears great field position.  Much like the game in Tampa a few weeks ago, Chicago capitalized and held a 21-7 lead at halftime.

Meanwhile, the Saints offense continued their struggles on the torn up pile of dirt known as Soldier Field’s grass.  Slipping, sliding and dropping passes led to very little to cheer about for Saints fans.  Not to mention some uncharacteristic poor decision-making by Drew Brees.

The low point for me came in the third quarter, when Brees threw an ill-advised pass while scrambling outside of the pocket near the Chicago goal line.  It was easily picked off by defensive lineman Adewale Ogunleye and sent me to bed early for the night.

True, I ought to be ashamed for giving up and missing the great comeback.  But honestly, I just couldn’t take another minute of watching this team implode against a mediocre opponent.  As things have turned out, it looks like the Saints are in that very same category.

It isn’t as though the Bears are a bad team, but the Saints seemed to hand them gift after gift.  Give Chicago credit for cashing in, but we know the Saints can play better than they did.  Unfortunately, we just haven’t seen solid performances from this team on a consistent basis.

Credit the Saints for coming back and at least taking the game to overtime.  But, when it counted, our old defensive achilles heel showed up at the wrong time.  This game could have been a season saver, but now it’s just a closing door on another wasted year.
