The 2006 Draft

Our friends over at NFL Mocks are reviewing the 2006 draft, which was certainly one of the best in Saints history.  They give the Saints a B- grade, but really, how can you not get a solid A+ for a draft that netted the likes of Reggie Bush, Jahri Evans, Roman Harper and Marques Colston?!?

I can understand the feeling that Bush hasn’t lived up to all the hype (who could live up to those expectations, anyway?), but thinking about the contributions made by that draft class as a whole is another story.  The 2006 draft was pivotal in making the Saints what they are today – defending Super Bowl champions.

(Note: NFL Mocks has since revised their grade for the Saints to an A!)

Wow, that’s rough! I’m not sure the Saints really ever expected Reggie to be a between-the-tackles type of runner. Payton’s mostly used him as a perimeter player and tries to get him into open space – that’s really his game. He’s always worked best when in tandem with an inside runner, first Deuce and now Pierre Thomas.

Looking back I wouldn’t say he was worth the #2 pick in the draft, but really he’s been a great fit for this team. If some team like the Browns picked him and needed him to carry the ball 25 times a game, that just wouldn’t work. But he does what the Saints need him to do. Overpriced, yes – overhyped – yes, but he’s been an effective member of this team.

Slight oversight on my proofreading skills. There is no way I give the Saints a lower grade than the Panthers.

Reggie Bush is a negative, not a positive, in that draft class. At ~36 fumbles per career carry and his inability to run between the tackles 90% of his career make him a ‘D’ grade at best. People want Reggie to be a weapon / productive, but truth is, the Saints are probably better off with a real player in his place.
