NFL Thoughts – Week 5
- Was there football this weekend?? It’s almost as if the sport existed in a completely different way for me with the Saints having the week off
- Ok, I gotta admit – the Broncos are for real. Josh McDaniels is the coach of the year at this point in the season. You beat the Patriots in come-from-behind fashion, you deserve some accolades. And Kyle Orton deserves a lot of credit as well because he’s just playing smart football and making the plays he needs to make. And don’t forget that defense…
- The Giants are one fierce team. I’ll be taking a closer look at them as we count down to the big game in the Superdome on Sunday. But I think it’s safe to say that, if the Saints beat NY, it would be hard to not call them the best team in the NFC.
- The Browns and Bills played the most boring game in history! The Bills have really struggled on offense. Remember, the only touchdown they scored against the Saints in Week 2 was the result of a fake field goal. Then just 10 points against the Dolphins and 3 points against Cleveland. Yikes…
- I was thinking about where Mike Shanahan will end up next season, if he coaches. Buffalo would be a possibility, and so could Washington, Houston or Carolina. I have to think Bill Cowher may decide to come back in 2010 as well.
- I give the Lions some credit, they gave the Steelers everything they could handle. Really it was just a few mistakes that kept them from winning.
- The Vikings really are on a roll and my goodness the Rams are terrible.
- Do you think any of this year’s new coaches in St. Louis, Kansas City, Cleveland or Tampa Bay will get fired during the season? Not a whole lot to like about any of those teams right now. It’s probably not fair to fire a guy after one season (or part of one) but remember, Cam Cameron got canned in Miami after a 1-15 debut.
- How about those Bengals!?!? Going into Baltimore and taking out the Ravens is impressive. Are they the best team in the AFC North right now? I have to say yes. To think this could happen is just amazing. Marvin Lewis could have been fired years ago and to see Cedric Benson run like a champ might make him the surprise player of the year so far.
- The Panthers rallied to beat the Redskins. Still two teams that look to be on the downward spiral.
- Come on 49ers, we needed you win to this week! The Falcons were just on fire. The NFC South race is far from over.
- I’m glad the Cardinals held on. They can still take that division.
- The Titans are now 0-5 and I don’t see any reason to think they’ll turn it around. Should Jeff Fisher feel anxious about his job? I guess it’s possible to stay in one place for too long (see Jim Mora). Still, I think you give him a mulligan on this year so far. It’s bound to happen to everyone at some point. But I would still think the Titans ownership would need to see an improvement in the second half of the season.
- Could we have another 0-16 team this year? There are certainly a few who look like they could do it…

Right on! Better to play in the Dome in October than in New York in December
But this will be a great matchup. It’ll be interesting to see if we can throw off Manning’s timing. He’ll be by far the best QB we’ve faced so far.
Biggest surprise for me has to be the Bengals. And yes there is going to be a few coaches in the unemployment line this year. I’m so looking forward to this game against the Giants. Like you said, the winner could be the best team in the NFC. I think even if we loose, we have a great coaching staff to make needed adjustments. So in a nut shell, I’m glad were playing the Giants in week 5 and not in week 14 as it will be easier to adjust now compared to later if need be.
