Attention Reggie Bush Haters: Calm Down!

Our friend Jeff Duncan of the Times-Picayune has it right – be patient.  It was only one bad game!  It’s fair to criticize the game he had (which I’ve done on this blog), but exceedingly premature to say his career is somehow on the brink of ruin.

And, as much as I loved what Mike Bell gave the Saints against Detroit, let’s not anoint him the second coming of Deuce McAllister just yet.  I believe in him, but he’s still got to prove that he can be an effective back over an entire 16 game schedule.

As for Reggie Bush, he just needs to shake off the rust that built up after he missed almost the entire preseason.  Give him time.

He was outstanding as a returner and a receiver last year, and even showed improvement as a runner – until he got hurt.  That’s the only thing that will hold him back.

Readers of this blog and listeners of my former podcast know that I’ve often been critical of Sean Payton’s use of Bush.  Last season, he overused #25 and injury resulted.   Here’s hoping that isn’t the case in 2009, because he means a lot to this team.

Bell’s success and the imminent return of Pierre Thomas will hopefully mean that Bush will be used more like he was in 2006, when Deuce did the heavy lifting and Reggie was a change of pace, receiver and world-class decoy.  I think that’s how he can best help the Saints.

Totally agree on your point about Reggie Bush. We must remember the guy is trying to hard and he is rusty. If I was a coach I would love to have a guy with this type of attitude.
